Docker is a set of platform as a service (PaaS) products that use OS-level virtualization to deliver software in packages called containers. Solomon Hykes started the Docker project in France as an internal project within dotCloud, a platform-as-a-service company. This will prove an advantage when multiple businesses share the same hardware as in a typical commercial cloud service, because the containerised machine’s hardware resources are shared more efficiently then in virtual machines which replicate individual computers and thus do not share resources. What we can say is that if such a business runs a certain deployment, say with Windows Server 2016, which happily supports 20 users but will not happily support 30 users, then if our testing shows that another type of deployment offers a 25% improvement in load capacity over Windows Server 2016 tested like-for-like than that predicted improvement in users supported can realistically be applied to their situation. This potential user capacity number is a comparator not an absolute because the reality of different business requirements, the efficiency or otherwise of their FileMaker systems, their hardware and their networks make direct comparisons difficult. Our objective was to establish what sort of viable alternative a Linux (CentOS 7.8) deployment would offer a business currently using a Windows Server 2016 service either on-premise or in-cloud? How would costs and performance compare? How we tested performance We approached a couple of other hosting companies but did not receive any other offers of testing facilities.
